Types of Disabilities Among Divyangjan (PwDs) and Sarthak’s Empowerment Journey

Understanding Disability and Inclusion

Disability is not inability—it is simply a different way of experiencing the world. In India, as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, 21 categories of disability are recognized, ensuring that Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), also called Divyangjan, receive rightful opportunities, dignity, and support.

At Sarthak Educational Trust, our mission is to empower Divyangjan by breaking barriers in health, education, skilling, and employment. To create a truly inclusive society, it is important to understand the different types of disabilities and how tailored interventions can make a difference.

Major Types of Disabilities

  • Locomotor Disability: Restricted movement of limbs due to polio, paralysis, amputation, or cerebral palsy. Sarthak supports with mobility aids and vocational training.
  • Visual Impairment: Includes blindness and low vision. Sarthak offers computer literacy, tele-calling, and digital training for career opportunities.
  • Hearing Impairment: Partial or complete hearing loss. Sign language training and assistive technology prepare individuals for jobs in retail, hospitality, and IT.

  • Intellectual Disability: Includes Down Syndrome, Autism, and developmental delays. Our Early Intervention Centers provide therapy, counseling, and inclusive education.
